Macro fruit photography – blood oranges

Creative projects

Blood oranges are the ultimate seasonal treat. They are the optimistic, uplifting boost I need in the depths of winter. I love their fresh, natural vibrance, their glossy, juicy textures, their incredible range of colours. The perfect subject for mouth-watering food portraiture.

I am passionate about capturing the remarkable details of macro food and drink photography. Crafting the light to gently skim these tiny subjects, so all their texture, shape and colour is perfectly enhanced.

There is a special skill to lighting and shooting macro photography – the scene is dramatically reduced in size, so the set up needs to reflect that. Really focusing the light brings out those crisp, graphic details, with the strong, clean contrast that characterises my work.

Every year I shoot blood oranges and each year I try to produce images that are better than the last. This multi-year project helps me track my creative progress and photography skill development (the bigger multi-year project that will never be done!).
